The
Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library and Learning Resource Center
provides health sciences information and an academic learning
environment. The library serves Howard University, its consortia
members, and the outside medical community of the Greater Washington,
DC area. Members of the general public who have a need for health
information, are also welcome.
The library presently compromises five basic departments: Administration,
Public Services, Reference & Education, Building & Facilities
Management, Technical Services, and Archives & Special Collections. The
Archives & Special Collections department presently functions
through Public Services, Reference & Education but eventually
will be developed into a separate entity. The library system
needs are currently being handled by the Serials Librarian with
assistance from Help Desk Staff and oversight by the Administration.
Administration coordinates individual departmental activities
and the library participation with regional and national consortia. In
addition, it deals with the financial responsibilities of the
library and coordinates payments for materials needed for patron
usage. Although there is a Special Collections Room and display
room, the Archives & Special Collections Department hasn't
been fully developed at this time .
Inquiries and services of an archival nature should be
addressed at the reference desk.
Visit
our Public Services, Reference and Education Department to investigate
your health sciences questions . Did you know that more women die from breast
cancer than do men from prostate cancer even though more cases
of prostate cancer are diagnosed annually? (American Cancer
Society, 1998)
The
Building & Facilities Management Department organizes the
maintenance and leasing of the space within the library. The
library has a Presentation Room, a Video Conference Room, a
Telemedicine Center, a Special Collections Room and an open
foyer with a Display Room. Without the Technical Services Department,
the library would be a building without resources. The Technical
Services Department purchases approximately 1,000 new items
for our collections annually and evaluates many more.
The Library participates in several regional and national consortia
which allows us to provide you with the greatest possible access
to Health Sciences Information.
Come
visit us. Our staff is
ready to help you with your health sciences information needs.
