The
Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library (LSHSL) is committed
to providing library instruction sessions that:
- Assist
students in developing research skills to achieve academic
excellence and life-long skills in using information effectively.
- Assist
faculty, staff and health professionals in their information
seeking needs for teaching and research.

Goals and Objectives:
GOAL
#1 - Provide students with specific skills needed
to complete assignments as requested.
Objectives:
-
To assist the user in identifying useful information
from information sources and systems.
- To acquaint the user with the LSHSL facilities and
services
- To provide the user with information on the organization
of the collection and how to access it.
GOAL #2 – Prepare users with effective
life-long use of information, information sources and information
systems.
Objectives:
-
To develop the skills to be able to identify various
types of information, how to utilize information sources
and the developing and formulating of search strategies
and questions.
- To train users to interpret and analyze medical subject
headings.
LIBRARY
INSTRUCTION CONSISTS OF 2 LEVELS:
Level 1: Basic – (Freshman and Transfer Students
Orientation)
This category includes all incoming students as well as
transfer students. These students will be introduced to
- Library
layout. Tours will be conducted at the beginning of each
semester and/or upon request.
- The
LSHSL and its resources. Students will acquire an understanding
of how information is organized and retrieved; learn how
to determine the nature and extent of the information
needed; learn how to organize the information that is
used; learn how to evaluate the information retrieved,
including information from web sites.

Library policies, procedures, handouts, and basic guides.

Various style manuals.
Level
II: Advanced
-
Specialized resources for specific assignments or course
of study. Here, instruction is designed to cover specific
subject areas or disciplines for individuals or groups.

Research strategy with specific concerns on databases,
STERLING, medical subject headings and/or subject analysis,
and also the broad range of technology in the library.
